Our “Military” Vacation Timeshare

I have friends and family that own timeshares or vacation clubs and I have always wanted to buy one too. I thought I was missing out on all the vacation fun. After a couple of our family getaways to Hawaii and San Diego using military lodging I realized I am not missing out on anything. I have my own “Military” Vacation Timeshare and I don’t have to pay any monthly fees or taxes. As an active duty military benefit we are able to stay at any military base lodging in the world.

We were invited to a wedding at the Historic Presidio Park in San Diego on a Friday afternoon. I decided to make the weekend a mini vacation trip for the family. I had a lot of military lodging options in the San Diego area, like Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), Naval Base San Diego, Point Loma, or Naval Base North Island (Coronado). I picked the Naval Base North Island Navy Lodge because it is newer and it has a private beach.

The Naval Base North Island Navy Lodge is at the Northern side of Coronado Island. The hotel is new and very modern. We checked in on a Friday night and it was a little busy because there was a group of sailors doing a group weekend getaway. The pool is in the middle of the hotel and the sandy beach is less than 50 feet away.  The sand is white with gold flakes and the water is calm. The beach is in the base so it’s private and quiet. Hotel Coronado is visible from the beach and military helicopters fly by once in a while. The place is perfect for a family getaway or a romantic weekend.

Pros: The hotel has a mini mart that is open 24 hours. It carries everything that you might have forgotten at home, like sand toys, flip flops, and ice coolers. The mini mart also sells beer and a good selection of wine.

Cons: I was not able to book online and found out that other guests had the same problem. I kept calling the reservation line for two weeks. The day before our reservation they opened rooms up for leisure guests because active duty members on orders have first priority for reservations at all military lodging.
